Gin Rummy Legends: Stu Ungar

Before his death in 1998 at the age of just 42 years Stu Ungar was known for his genius-IQ and photographic ability to remember the order of cards picked-up and discarded in Gin Rummy and later Blackjack and Poker. He was equally infamous for his temper and rock ‘n roll lifestyle as the first Poker Superstar!

Stu Unger started playing Gin Rummy as a young man and proved so adept at the game he could no longer get any serious big-money Gin Rummy games! Even by offering up to 10% of all his opponent's losses, Stu still couldn't find any serious action anywhere in the USA, such was his reputation and obvious skill at the game.

We constantly get emails from our global gang of players about what they like about our games – last week we received a great email from Daniel in Duesseldorf, Germany, one of the site's long-serving players with his own top tips on how to win at Blackjack!

“Assuming you play 5 hands at the same time (which is the best you can do):

“Try to get a 17 or higher”. When there are many low cards on the table ... I sometimes stay at 16. Don’t mind if you loose some hands. Using this strategy you might lose much in one round, but you're gonna get it back in another!

• “Put insurance on 2-3 Hands” when the Dealer shows an ace. You will not lose that much if the Dealer gets Blackjack, and you won’t lose too much if he doesn't.
• “When the dealer shows a 10, never ever double”, and try to get as high as possible. Try to get 21's, which means of course you stand at a 19 or 20. But if you have more 17's I would hit at least on one of them because a 10 shown by the dealer mostly foreshadows a "21".
• The above can be used to your advantage. When the dealer shows a 10 in the beginning and gets a 21, you can be pretty sure that its one of those situations where the dealer gets 21 no matter what you do. This means that the last 2 rounds you played and lost do not necessarily mean that you automatically are losing out to your opponent...because 80% of the time he has lost those hands too. So you can relax and you don't need to risk playing an offensive game as the offensive game means more risk.
• If you have a high score, like over 19.000, just start only playing $100 hands, so in case the cards get worse, your opponent will fall into big disadvantages.
• Splitting cards is intuitive....sometimes when I see that I had good cards the last round, but still did not do well (like the dealer got 21 or something like that), I split hands and double a lot next round because I know that my opponent has not necessarily had the same bad cards and so he might be ahead in points. I don’t split often, however a split is recommended in games with higher stakes. It's more risk, but you have only pros in the higher rounds. And when you use splitting combined with the tactics described above you can achieve VERY good results.

Note: These tactics are no guarantee for success, it's just a good strategy to constantly win over a long time, even if you lose some games in a row.
